Alex Harvey and Friends perform at Laureate Records Showcase
While performing in Houston, Harvey met actor James Garner, who helped him get established in the acting community in Los Angeles. There he collected many credits in film and television, co-starring with James Garner, Jane Fonda, Jessica Lange, Haley Mills, Shirley Jones, and many others. All the while writing hits that would firmly establish him as a writer in the music world, including "Delta Dawn" recorded by Helen Reddy, Tanya Tucker, & Bette Midler, "Rings" recorded by Cimarron & The Glaser Brothers, "Hell And High Water" recorded by T. Graham Brown, and "Someone Who Cares" recorded by Kenny Rogers, Andy Williams, Peggy Lee, and Eydie Gorme.
Having returned to the Nashville scene, Harvey has settled into the Tennessee lifestyle for the past few years with his wife, Ava, who helps him run his publishing company, Preshus Child Music. He has recently garnered cuts by Billy Ray Cyrus, "Somebody New", which earned Cyrus a top five single, Flaco Jimenez, " Seguro Que Hell Yes", and Chris LeDoux, "Five Dollar Fine. He has also had songs cut by Don Williams, Willie Nelson and Jimmy Buffett.
Harvey has recently joined forces with partner Bill Lynch to form Laureate Records, a label dedicated to the performing songwriter, with plans to record Kim Carnes, John Scott Sherrill, Keith Sykes, Robert Byrne, Allen Shamblim, Austin Cunningham, Trey Bruce and James Dean Hicks. Lanching Laureate Records internationally at Midem 96, Harvey can be found by day atthe Nashville stand and late night at Le Saloon for a writers night featuring special guests each evening. Those who missed his performance last year, will have another chance hear his songs, as only Harvey can perform them, in the side room (Esterel) at the Martinez on Tuesday, January 23rd at 6:30pm for the Laureate Records Showcase.
Pulling the guitar with him this year will be fellow Nashville songwriters, James Dean Hicks, and Trey Bruce. Having been raised on a farm in Kentucky, Hicks will share his own brand of country songs which have been recorded by many of country's new breed of artists, including, John Michael Montgomery, Sammy Kershaw, Neal McCoy, Confederate Railroad, Larry Stewart, and Tracy Byrd. Hicks has written four number one singles: "National Working Woman's Holiday", recorded by Kershaw, "Jesus and Mama" recorded by Confederate Railroad, "It Takes A Little Rain" and "Crazy Love", both recorded by the Oak Ridge Boys. Currently pursuing a career as a recording artist,Hicks is running his publishing company, On The Mantel Music, and developing staff writers Eric Albany, Mark Levine and Cory Johnson.
Having grown up in his father's shadow, (Veteran country songwriter/recording artist/actor, Ed Bruce, who wrote "Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Cowboys"), Trey Bruce has earned his own place in the spotlight with his hit songwriting. Bruce has had songs covered by Randy Travis ( including the number one hit, "Look Heart, No Hands"), John Michael Montgomery, Trisha Yearwood, Steve Wariner, Larry Stewart, Doug Stone, Neal McCoy, Shelby Lynn and Faith Hill. Having been an MCA staff writer for 5 years, Bruce has currently formed a publishing company, Big Tractor, with partner and top record producer, Scott Hendricks in a co-venture with Warner/Chappell Music in Nashville. While continuing to turn out the songs, Bruce is being recognized as a talented producer also.
